A farmer had been digging a well outide his house. One morning he woke up and heard a sickening, sad braying noise coming from the deep hole. He quickly discovered that his old, faithful donkey had fallen in during the night.
He realised there was no way of getting his poor old friend out of the well. He couldn't leave it to die a slow, agonising death from heat and thirst, so, with heavy heart he started to shovel earth back into the well. 'Better to die a quick death - more humane.' Thought the farmer.
He had been toiling in the baking heat for much of the day when he finally plucked up the courage to look down into the hole. He expected to see only dry dirt where his friend had stood. But to his amazement and joy the donkey was standing on top of the pile of dirt, staring up expectantly. The farmer realised what was happening. As he threw a shovel of dirt into the hole, the donkey shook off the dirt, trampled it down and climbed up on top of the mound.
The farmer was filled with hope and happiness and shovelled faster and faster, the donkey shook and trampled away. They worked non-stop through the night and half of the following day. At last, the farmer fell to his knees, exhausted but happy, the donkey was able to climb out and limp away.

Epilogue
The following day the farmer went to check on his trusty old donkey. The disgruntled animal bit him for trying to bury it. A few days later the farmer died in agony of septicaemeia.
Lesson No. 2 - If you get into a hole and try to cover your ass, it'll always come back to bite you.
