well as to your answer I'm not sure and not googling as that's cheating but I would say maybe one or two I can't remember them much I am 66 so just before my time but `I do remember my brother listening to them he was 4 years olderBefore today's offering a little pop quiz. If no one gets it I will reveal the answer tomorrow. How many chart successes have 'The Pink Floyd' had?
An easy choice for this offering, I am an insomniac, sometimes go two or three days without sleep, so have an affinity with this song simply due to the title 'Help me make it through he night' by the great Kris Kristofferson. The only difficulty was which version to use, a solo, accompanied by his fellow Highwaymen,( Wille Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johny Cash ). In the end I chose his collaboration with 'Lady Antebellum' or just 'Lady A'as we are supposed to say nowadays, which feature the fantastic vocals of Charles Kelly.
The song is about loneliness, a despair so deep that any contact no matter how brief or shallow is welcome. Clearly he is not addressing someone close , or even known to him ... 'all I'm taking is your time'. It reminds me of the lines from 'The Boxer' by Simon and Garfunkel:
'Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare,
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there'.
Kristofferson was a fascinating man, he came from a military family and was expected to continue the tradition. He did serve in both the army and National Guard and qualified as a helicopter pilot. At college he was a noted athlete and plaid Rugby. . He gained a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University where he studied English Literature, with a particular interest in the Mystical Poet William Blake. Her gained a Masters as was offered teaching posts at several universities as well as the US Military Academy West Point.
He struggled for many yeas trying to break through offering songs to Johnny Cash without success. Eventually he gained Cash's attention by the simple method of ... er... 'borrowing' a National Guard helicopter flying down and landing on Cash's back lawn ... as you do! Cash recorded 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' which many associated with Cash not Kristofferson. This was never an issue as Kristofferson always considered himself a song writer than a singer. He once said something along the lines of: the greatest tribute that can be paid to a song writer is that someone takes your song and makes it their own.
The best example of someone making a song their own is Janis Joplin's recording of 'Me and Bobby Magee', which was recorded days before her death. Ar one time they were an item, on hearing her recording he spent a day playing it over and over util he could do so without crying.
Again this looks interesting. I have only dipped my toe in the water with this , I will break it down over several sessions.I agree another one is this one
your not as stuck as you think when it becomes food for thought for you xAgain this looks interesting. I have only dipped my toe in the water with this , I will break it down over several sessions.
I like to think I have a wide ( or weird ) taste in music although it is stuck in a time warp in the 60s and 70s and then rock or folk music, never anything approaching this, apart maybe from Matt Munro. I'm a bit stuck in my ways and stick with what I like. So is interesting to be presented with food for thought.
