I'm new on here! How do you know when they are fake posts?

Usually the ones with 3 to 5 pictures in the first post, and/or some sort of contact email, snapchat, kik etc wanting guys to contact them direct. and usually don't post on the thread again. Easy to spot.

Odomical's right, in that they'll have their contact details on there, be it email, KIK, SC, even phone number; this is because they are probably using bots to create the posts (hence why you tend to see the same post over and over again in different forums). It's an easy win for the scammers because it requires no further effort, and the people who are likely to fall for it will just contact them via the details.

Once contacted, there are several things that could happen, ranging from attempts to make you feel sorry for their situation to get money out of you, getting your payment details to get money out of you, or identity theft in order to get money out of you and other people. Some of the pictures can be from other people they have already scammed from other sites.

Search for the pictures
If you have a Chrome browser, it's easy - on you PC you right click on the picture and select 'Search Google for Image'; on a phone you press and hold until a menu appears, and then 'Search Google for Image'. Depending what I find, I either post the Google search results, to show lots of instances of the image being used, or I'll post links and other pictures from what I think may be the source of the pictures.
