Has been something of a controversial subject. For women and for men. Opinions/thoughts ? Nothing more.
Some years ago I was having pains in the bones in my lower legs at night - quite painful. Shrugged it off. Then considering how many times I'd had broken bones in life and a consultant telling me in a hospital that I worked in in London - that I had fine build and bones and would find my bones might break more easily. I was going to gym and quite fit and supple. I could bend over and kiss a grape on the ground. So I ask my GP for a blood test - for testosterone. He tells me he knows I am fine and don't need it. Not long after I have a seizure whilst out in a supermarket. Lasted 30 mins. Grand mal. Never had one in life before. I wake up in ambulance and taken to A+E. Wait ten hours to be seen. I minded but didn't either because I have worked there before and knew the pressures. Some doc - female - though looked like a man - orders a CT scan of brain. All clear. My right shoulder by now is like that of an American footballer with the pads on. So swollen. The doc later returns with a nurse. I ask her - doc - about my arm. She has fifteen mins left of her shift. I can see on face of the nurse it is clear there is something radically wrong. The doc makes me pull on her fingers - neurological testing. 'You are fine' and sends me home. I am in agony but not a wimper. Two days later I go back with a family member. Wait ten hours - different doctor - older man. A nurse manager I had once worked with sits beside me. He tells me I must have a very high pain thresh hold. I ask why. My right shoulder is completely destroyed and I have two deep fractures to scapula/shoulder blade on left side. I had to have a new right shoulder replacement and worked hard at getting back to my old self. The first thing they tested was testosterone - bone density. I have osteoporosis. Quite young for this condition. Shows how much GPs know. I know they know sweet FA most of time anyway. But today there is a trend in young men to mis use testosterone and other drugs to get 'perfect bodies'. SEX. Yes it enlarges muscle etc - but that includes the heart muscle and that is deadly - literally. Messes up so many other systems too. They become infertile, pituitary gland, adrenals etc. Like women were forced to look a certain way for centuries for men. It can be a life saver IF you clinically need it. Women or men. Saves on the hot flashes
But most young men and women should not be taking these things. Russian roulette.
Any sexperiences with the ol' hormone treatments ? I do believe with further research they will find ways to help improve quality of life in older people - but young people are playing with fire. Peer pressure for the 'summer six pack' in a week, as one PT put it to me.
