What's the problem with fake profiles?

In one of the threads, someone asked what did it matter if profiles are fake, if people are enjoying themselves.

That's a fair comment.

However, if someone is purposefully misrepresenting themselves to deceive others, you surely have to be asking why. Sure, it's common knowledge that people put forward 'a version' of themselves on social media sites, but these people are going beyond that.

Avatars
Most people will assume (rightly or wrongly) that if this is a picture of somebody, that the somebody is them, unless it's someone very famous - if I stuck a picture of George Clooney up, you'd know it wasn't me. There's a male profile on here with an avatar of a woman who regularly get's people telling him how hot 'she' looks... not realising it's a male profile. If you want to use someone else's picture as your avatar, if it's not obvious to the majority that it isn't you, there's no harm in saying on your profile "avatar not my picture" to avoid any confusion. Either that, or use Shaggy from Scooby-Doo as your avatar.

Share Your Pics
There's an implication here that the pictures are either of you, or taken by you - the label of the forum is 'Share YOUR Pics' after all.

So if someone posts a picture here, is should be either of, or taken by them (exceptions being threads like 'GIFS that turn you on', where it's obvious from the name).

So why would anyone post pictures of a pornstar or instagram model here, with titles implying 'looking for', unless they are trying to deceive people?

Why do they want to deceive us?
There are a few reasons. 'For Money' would cover several scenarios:
  • By getting you to pay for for a non-existent service
  • By getting your credit card details, to drain until you block it
  • By extortion - getting compromising pictures of you, and threatening to share them with your family/social media contacts
  • By getting enough details about you to 'steal your identity', which can be used to acquire things and rack up debts in your name - they can also use your identity to mask their own when scamming others.
I have heard from other UKChat users that the first three scenarios have happened to them from profiles on this site.

If any of these have happened to you let the admins know - they can block the profiles to ensure nobody else is duped by the same profile.

Other reasons
We've seen a couple recently where pornstar pictures were passed off as their own. To my knowledge, there was no attempt to extract money in these cases, so I can only speculate this was done for their own entertainment, deriving some enjoyment out of deceiving, degrading or humiliating others under false pretences. No fiscal reward, but still malicious.

How can you check the profiles?
I get asked this a lot. If you use the Chrome browser on your phone, tablet or PC, you can right-click or hold the image until a menu appears, and then search google for the image.

You'll also find that bot profiles will make the same post in different forums, so if you find lots of posts appearing from the same profile with the same text and pictures in different forums in a short space of time, you know it's going to be iffy.

Also treat those threads that begin with a post that includes something like "you can contact me at..." with suspicion.

Note that there are some profiles that you will find elsewhere. I see 'Onlyfans' pages becoming promoted here, where you'd have to sign up for content. Whilst I would not indulge in these services myself, and do not particularly want to see them here (there's enough advertising on this site), there's no deception as they are quite open to wanting money for pictures. Likewise for the profiles who say sign up to their SC or Kik for premium content - this again implies some charge is carried, so no deception.

There are also some exhibitionists who have their own amateur pages on other sites; usually you'll find their contact details match (where sites allow them to publish their contact details) - where contact details aren't available, there's always user name and location to compare. So just because somebody's pictures appear elsewhere, it doesn't automatically make them a scammer.

What can we do?
I have to say, I've noticed a decrease in the number of a certain bot's profiles, which I think is down to the work of the Moderators and Admins (thanks @Jody, @elwoodbluz1966 et al). But they don't do this full-time, and they can't see everything that goes on, so:
  • on profiles misrepresenting themselves with pornstar or model pictures, use the 'Report' link on the profile or post to notify the staff
  • if you've been on the receiving end of one of the scenarios I've posted above (or been taken advantage of in another way that I haven't thought of), message one of the Admins to let them know.
I would suggest you put a post on the suspect profile's threads to say there's something wrong, preferably with some sort of evidence, after reporting them, as it may take time for the staff to respond (they're not here 24/7, remember). I used to post links to original pictures, but find that many people here ignore those, so I'll post pictures when I'm able because:
  • it's more likely to get the reader's attention
  • I also post a screenshot of the profile picture, as in the past some of the scammers have changed their picture after I've exposed them.
@MrXray also created a 'FAF' thread for such things, which is useful for spotting the profiles that disappear and return using the same pictures.

Sorry for the lengthy read, and if you got this far, thank you for taking the time to read.

There are other reasons... A while back we joined an adult site and whilst it didn't show our names, it did have our area and some pics of us that showed our faces... In short, we were recognised by someone that sort of knew us which ended up causing some issues for us (more for her). So we removed ourselves from that site. We have created a new profile but now we don't show faces and we're less specific with our location...

Anonymity is fine, but there are those who are trying to pass themselves off as someone else in deliberate attempts to mislead.

If you want to remain anonymous, you can use a discrete picture of yourselves, or use a cartoon or something like that.

Wouldn't of been fab by any chance. You have to be very careful what info you put on sites.
